Dutch TV: what’s coming in October and November.

October 20, 2013

With all the current series coming to an end or already finished, it might be interesting to look ahead what to expect for the second half of the fall.

Most important change for the main public channel NED1 might be the new Saturday night show ‘De Kwis’. The concept initiated in the show of Paul de Leeuw, being a segment, but by far the most popular one. In this ‘quiz show’, 4 comedians ask questions to a celebrity about the news of the last week. With the correct answers, he or she can eliminate questions that they rather not answer. The lead-in of the very popular clip show ‘Animal Crackers’ will help the program a lot, but the new evening starts in November, a week after the new shows on RTL and SBS.

Furthermore, ‘Hello Goodbye‘ is returning with a new host, which could be interesting for the show. The former host Joris Linssen has a new show, which will premiere in November: Joris United. He will try to reunite former fugitives with the loved ones from their home country, which they thought they would never meet again. Another very interesting show could be ‘Tot op het bot’, in which girls struggling with anorexia are followed in their fight against the eating disorder. Not a type of show you are looking forward to see, but could have a big impact on the discussion.

For RTL4 the new Tuesday night might be the most interesting: ‘Verslaafd’ and ‘The Taste’. In ‘Verslaafd’, addicted persons will be helped to overcome their addiction. From gambling to alcohol, they need to be helped now before it might be too late. ‘The Taste’ is the American format, being a co-production with VTM in Belgium. The cooking shows have not been doing extremely well, so it’s interesting how it will perform.

Additionally, on Wednesdays the popular ‘Hotter Than My Daughter’ will return, followed by new drama series ‘Verlaten Vrouwen’. Also quite interesting how it turns out, but probably will be a strong performing day for the channel. The new Thursday is already a huge hit, and ‘The Voice’ continues on Fridays. ‘Hollands Got Talent’ premieres next week on Saturday, followed by the yesterday premiered ‘Volgende Week’. Have I Got News For You, but then in a more talk show like setting, and looking forward to the news of the next week. Personally didn’t like it all, but will wait for episode 2 before reviewing. On Sundays it might be the most interesting show of all: ‘Echte Penoze‘. Real, big criminals will tell their life story why and how they became a serious (convicted) criminal.

On the smaller channels, RTL5 has one of the most interesting and highly anticipated format based on the film ‘Intouchables’. In ‘het zal me een rotzorg zijn’, a troubled youngster will be teamed up with a terminal-ill patient. RTL7 will bring a new original format that could do well: a quiz about football.

SBS6 is still moving a lot with their shows. It was expected to have a new series of ‘Who Wants To Marry My Son’ on Wednesdays after ‘Dokter Tinus’, but they opted to repeat the very well performing series of ‘Waar Is De Mol’. In November they will start with a brand new music format ‘Beter dan het Origineel’; quite similar to Best Singers, but also a bit different probably. It’s a game show with 6 professional artists, who will need to cover each other songs to earn points. But more importantly: SBS6 will be doing original content on Saturdays finally. They have been airing movies on prime-time for the last months, and the best rated Saturday show was ‘Funniest Homevideos’, airing from 19.00 to 20.00 and getting around 600k.

Next week, they have a smart choice of programming I think. Completely different from their competition, SBS will air the series ‘Verliefd op Ibiza’. It was Dutch romantic comedy film of a few years back, which did quite well. They developed the story into a series, taking the story lines further. The show is followed by ‘Welkom bij de Kamaras’, according to the channel the biggest hidden camera show in years. Nine celebrities travel to Africa, to experience the lives of an authentic tribe. However, the tribe is created with actors, playing the roles of the chief, the medicine man, and so on. The actors invented all the rituals and traditions the celebrities are participating in.

So, next Saturday will be a very interesting night. Probably the first episode of Ibiza and the Kamaras will do well, as it is something completely new and different. But then again, it’s still airing on a troubled SBS6, that hasn’t had a decent audience on Saturdays for ages. Furthermore, it needs to be good, because the alternatives on NED1 and RTL4 are well known and good shows as well.

We will see what’s going to happen, but I am looking forward to the new shows coming soon.
